Wildland-Urban Interface is defined as the zones where human homes and buildings meet or mix with wildland trees and brush. It was officially designated by the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA 2003) to authorize federal agencies to fast-track resources to clear dangerous trees and brush in high-risk areas to stop wildland fire. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) defines WUI as either (a) HFRA-designated areas; (b) areas covered by Community Wildfire Protection Plans; or (c) geographic coverage of critical evacuation routes.
